Minimising harm
We weigh the public interest against the harm publication may cause, particularly to people who are not public figures. We take special care with grief, trauma, children, and images of the dead or injured.
Privacy
We intrude into private life only where there is a clear public interest, and only to the extent that interest requires. Being interesting is not the same as being in the public interest.
Honesty in newsgathering
We identify ourselves as journalists. We do not misrepresent who we are or record covertly, except where a story of significant public interest cannot be obtained any other way, and then only with senior editorial approval.
Payment and gifts
We do not pay sources for stories. Journalists do not accept gifts, hospitality, or travel from people or organisations they cover beyond what is trivial, and disclose anything that could look otherwise.
Plagiarism and attribution
We credit other outlets when we follow their reporting. Passing off another journalist's work as our own is grounds for dismissal.
Diversity
We seek a range of voices in our sourcing and our hiring, and we review whose perspectives our coverage routinely omits.
