Sourcing

Sources are named wherever it is safe and possible to name them. Where a source must stay confidential, we explain why in the article and corroborate the claim with at least one independent second source.

Verification

Factual claims are checked against primary material — documents, filings, recordings, direct observation — before publication. Where a claim rests on a single source, we say so in the text.

Anyone facing a significant allegation is given a fair opportunity to respond before we publish, and their response is represented fairly.

Reporting and opinion

Opinion is labelled as opinion, on the page and in the URL. Reporting does not carry the writer's views. Columnists are free to argue; reporters are not.

Independence and conflicts

Advertisers and commercial partners have no influence over editorial decisions, and no advance sight of coverage. Sponsored material is labelled as such and is not written by the newsroom.

Writers disclose financial interests, memberships, and personal relationships that could reasonably affect their coverage, and recuse themselves where a conflict cannot be managed.

Coverage priorities

We prioritise stories that are consequential, under-reported, and verifiable. We avoid coverage driven only by what is trending.

Use of AI

We do not publish AI-generated articles under a human byline. Where automated tools assist with transcription, translation, or data analysis, the output is checked by a person who takes responsibility for it.
